Hi
Just curious if someone has input on how far I can mount my YI Outdoor security camera from my router?
25’, 50’, 100’?
I’m looking for a maximum range of anyone has tested this.
Thanks

Hello. The recommended maximum distance is 10m / 33ft / 11 yards.
Real world will be very different for every customer. Wall, building, construction material. Wifi congestion, weather conditions, atmosphere conditions and of course the quality of the router and any repeaters.
For me I get at least the recommended distance.
Thanks for the prompt reply
I’m going to test the range tomorrow.
I have a couple areas I’d like to cover at different ranges.
Stay tuned!
If you are in difficulty it is a good idea to install a wireless AP, like a TP link outdoor access point
With little obstruction I do get 200ft in some cases
If you’re working off the internal router it’s often restricted by more than one wall
I really like them. They’re plug and play. 1 cable plugged into the back of your router directly to it.
A good consistent connection is crucial for a trouble free camera. While you may appear to have a reasonable connection when you test it can drop due to certain environmental factors… One of these in the right place, nice and high gives omnidirectional coverage in line of sight
Thanks!
I’ll check that out.
I did a temporary install of a YI camera at my dog pen.
It’s 24m to the router going thru one wall.
So far it appears to be working fine.
I’m going to leave it setup for a couple days to see if it disconnects.
I will look into that access point you mentioned.
What’s the model # of the TP product?
Thanks again!

Hey!
I was able to get a connection at 24m.
I’m going to watch it to see how reliable the connection is.
I might setup a outside wireless AP if I can’t get a reliable connection.
There’s one other “long distance” connection I’m going to attempt, it’s about 40m.
I’m not holding out much hope for that distance but I’ll try it.
If it doesn’t work I’ll add the outdoor AP
Thanks!
I use TP link EAP110.
I have 3 of them, 2 on one large site (farmyard) and one at home in the box in case either fail!!
I buy them from Sotel.de in Germany. Appear to be the cheapest and if you indicate you’re UK they will supply correct plug
Check the bit rate on the bottom right of your screen when your device is in portrait mode. It shows your speed of transfer…select HD as opposed to SD… usually tells you pretty quickly if it’s good or not
That’s a really good distance. Be good to see how the connectivity goes and the speed of live view etc.
I would check to see if your router and then the device supports wifi beamforming which can target the wifi signal to the device.
Of course as you’ve mention with Brian additional access points and repeaters can help as too mesh style routers and devices.
Hey thanks for that info.
Currently I’ve set the connection at “auto”
The bit rate on the camera at 24m is between 25-30kb/s
It’s not fast but so far it’s been a steady connection.
I will try it set to HD.
I can see where I’ll probably go with an outdoor Wireless AP.
My problem so far is finding an Outdoor Wireless AP that doesn’t use POE.
I’m look for a AP that will run on an external power supply or simply plugs into an outdoor receptacle.
If you know of any AP that works like this I’d appreciate that information.
Again
Thanks

Hi
So far on the 24m connection thru one wall it’s between 25-30kb/s
The connection is set on auto.
I’m looking into an outdoor AP but haven’t found one that will work on an external power supply or simply plugs into an outdoor receptacle.
I’m trying to avoid an outdoor AP that uses POE
Thanks

How is the video. Does it lag or jerk at all? If it looks buttery smooth I wouldn’t get too overly worried about the indicated bit rate. I actually don’t think the app needs that.
If you have it working at the moment in the location you want the camera to be at. I would leave you set up as is now and see how it goes.
A little jerky but I can live with that.
The alert is pretty quick.
Even if I were to lose the wifi connection the camera continues to record onto the SD card.
I might actually try to take the camera offline to see how long before the SD card fills up.
I’m using the SanDisk 64gb Extreme micro SD card
Yes my understanding is that should you lose your connection to wifi you will have it record to SD. You could test that by turning off your router
Dang @Brian 200 ft?? that might be a record. Thanks for sharing info about your setup with the community. I wonder if someone can try to beat it?? We can have a contest. Any thoughts?
With certain work arounds you can maximize the potential of your cameras. The community is a great place to learn from others experiences!
Thank you @YorkshireUser @Swiftrun @Brian for joining in on the discussion
Hey Steven
Something a bit off topic but it’s in regards to Wi-Fi range.
I have a Bebop 2 drone.
I made a handheld controller from a ps2 style game controller and my iphone as a screen.
Used a Xiaomi antenna Wi-Fi extender connected to the PS2 controller and iphone.
I flew that Bebop 2 a 1000m on Wi-Fi with live streaming video.
It was getting weak at the 1000m but still enough control to fly it home.
This is what happens when a retiree has too much time on his hands:wink:
Just food for thought
Regards

I’ve seen some videos like that onYoutube amazing. They seem to be able to fly and fly. Once saw one taken almost into space, a bit like someone did with a Yi camera.
I used to have a drone but kept crashing it so got rid. Think it was the yellow version of the French company Parrot Bebop two. So traded it in. It was either that or watch the Parrot disintegrate after each ‘crash’.
Amazing pieces of technology which are just advancing everytime. I did like the way points GPS tracking which worked well but on free flight I just couldn’t make it fly.
Furthest I flew my Bebop 2 via gps waypoints is about 8km.
It was fun to watch the video after that big flight.
The thing I learned the quickest flying a drone, don’t fly by eyesight.
Use the onboard live stream, flying by eyesight you lose perspective quickly.
After the first crash, I start using my iphone screen to fly
I was always worried about losing it or crashing it. I know some have all the protection bubble of sensors to prevent all that stuff. They are good devices and help law enforcement now very well
I sent mine on a waypoint mission one time.
I forgot to setup one thing to be able to watch some of the flight.
After about a minute I realized I’d goofed up and wondered where I’d find the drone.
20 minutes later I hear that distinctive buzzing and look up and there it was coming in for a landing about 10’ where it took off from😁
Sigh of relief, it did what it was programmed to do
I did my happy dance
Yeah - my worry would be the less expensive ones don’t have the collision / obstacle sensors.
Plus reading all the do and do nots and the code I wouldn’t want to risk hitting anything.
